From Wall Push-Ups to Hiking In Spain

A few days ago we sat down with Kathy to talk about her first year with us.

She’s been with TENRA since pretty much the beginning.
She’s a busy business owner. Plays tennis. Spends time with her grandkids. When she started, she couldn’t do a single wall push-up without shoulder pain.

Now she’s hiking mountains in Spain and can do multiple FULL push-ups in a row!

Kathy’s joined gyms before. Plural. Always left frustrated.

“It’s the accountability, figuring out the machines on my own, no program. Crowded. Maybe lack of knowledge for the people that work there.”

When we asked what she likes most about training here, she didn’t talk about the equipment or the space.

“What you guys have done for me over this past year and the confidence you’ve given me is remarkable. I like the one-on-one. I love the program. I love how it changes.”

She said, “I don’t know that I would come here as often as I do if you guys weren’t holding me accountable.”

She needed structure. She needed someone who knew what they were doing. And she needed to know someone was expecting her to show up.

How She Discovered A New Passion

Four months in, Kathy went to Yosemite in May.

“I experienced my first big hike. I don’t think I would’ve been able to accomplish that hike or found that passion for hiking without being stronger and having four months of prep time here.”

She didn’t join TENRA to hike, but she is experiencing something she never thought of as a possibility because of the freedom that comes with a healthier body.

She discovered something about herself she didn’t know was there.

She kept training. A few months later, she hiked the Pyrenees Mountains in Spain.

“Something that I never, ever thought would be possible.”

Her tennis friends started commenting. She’s hitting the ball harder than ever. Playing better than she has in years. She can keep up with her grandkids now without getting gassed.

“It’s really spewed into every area of my life.”

Health Means More Than Just One Goal

When we asked if her goals had changed since starting, Kathy laughed a little.

“I think when I first came here, I thought I was in good shape. I didn’t realize how weak I really was. And where I was headed if I hadn’t come here.”

She paused.

“But I never thought that I’d be able to accomplish what I have. A lot of that, all of that, is credited to your confidence in me.”

Here’s what she means by that. When she started, everything was “Oh, I can’t do that.”

Now? “I don’t think there’s anything I can’t do anymore. The sky’s the limit. I see myself doing chin-ups someday.”
And I have no doubt that she will get there too!

That confidence didn’t stay in the gym.

“It’s helped build my confidence in other areas of my life. Not just in my weight training, but in all aspects of my life.”

When you prove to yourself that you can do things you thought were impossible, that shows up everywhere. Your business. Your relationships. How you approach challenges.

We asked her what the year-ago version of herself would say if she could see her today.

“She’d be like, ‘Girl, you have rocked this. You’ve accomplished more than you thought you could.’ She would say that she’s proud of everything she’s accomplished and looks forward to accomplishing more.”

Life In The Fourth Quarter

Near the end of the conversation, we asked what advice Kathy would give to people like her.

“If you really want a good quality of life in the fourth quarter, you really have to make a conscious effort to not only be active, but to keep lifting weights or training with someone that knows what they’re doing.”

She continued: “I plan and want to live a very long and healthy life. But I know in order to do that, I have to put in the work and I have to stay strong. So I have to continue to lift weights. But I need somebody to guide me through that.”

This is the thing, right? It’s not just about adding years. It’s about what those years actually look like.

Kathy’s hiking mountains. She’s outplaying people at tennis. She’s finding passions she didn’t even know existed.

Her Advice To You

“I think the misconception is that something like this can be very pricey and we can’t afford it. But I think TENRA has done a really good job of finding out what people need, finding out what they can afford, and then making a program that’s really special to their needs and that they can afford.”

Then she said: “Check it out. Sit down with them and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised that it’s something that you can’t afford not to.”

I don’t know what your version of hiking in Spain looks like.

Maybe it’s keeping up with your kids or grandkids. Maybe it’s finally taking that trip. Maybe it’s getting back to something you loved but thought you couldn’t do anymore.

Or maybe it’s discovering something completely new about yourself, like Kathy did with hiking.

She showed up a year ago with shoulder pain doing wall push-ups. She trusted the process. Put in the work, even with everything else going on as a business owner.

Now her life has opened up in ways she never expected.
