How many times has this happened to you?
You get really motivated to make a change.
You start going to the gym.
You start eating a little healthier.
Things are actually clicking.
Then work gets busy.
Family parties come up.
Birthday celebrations.
The perfect storm hits and destroys the momentum you worked so hard to build.
And just like that, you drift back into your old routine.
I’ve had this happen to me multiple times. And I love diet and training.
It happens to everybody.
That’s not me being negative by any means.
That’s just acknowledging other factors besides our health and fitness plans are important.
Here’s what I’ve learned after working with hundreds of people: it’s rarely the falling off that kills your progress.
It’s the thinking that happens right after.
First, We Need The Right Mindset
I’ve seen one thing destroy more progress than almost anything else.
The All or Nothing mentality.
And the reason it’s so dangerous is that the logic actually sounds pretty solid.
“If I can’t get a full workout in today, it makes more sense to rest and come back tomorrow.”
“If I can’t eat perfectly today, I might as well enjoy myself and start fresh tomorrow.”
You feel like you’re playing the long game. Protecting the end goal.
But in the fitness world, perfectionism is usually just procrastination in disguise.
Here’s a quick example.
Say you’re trying to drop 15lbs before June.
(Such a great goal)
You’re disciplined and dialed in.
Then your niece’s birthday comes around and there’s a Dairy Queen ice cream cake… your absolute favorite.
You decline.
Then she gives you the puppy dog eyes.
Suddenly this isn’t just about losing weight.
It’s about being present with her on her birthday.
A lot of people cave completely and write the whole day off.
But here’s what actually keeps your momentum alive: instead of going off plan entirely, you ask yourself “How can I do my best today given my situation?”
Take a piece of cake. Just take a smaller one than you normally would.
That’s it. That’s the shift.
When your mindset moves from “I need to follow the plan” to “let’s do my best today,” those “slip-ups” that used to derail you stop coming as often as they used to.
How To Apply This At The Gym
You’ve got a good rhythm going.
Two to five days a week.
You know what you like.
You know how it’s moving you toward your goal.
What do you do when suddenly work needs you more and things get crazy at home at the same time?
Here’s exactly what to do.
Step 1: Be honest about your time.
How many days can you realistically make it to the gym this week? Three? Two? Zero?
Find that number first before you do anything else.
Step 2: Find the most important exercise in your routine.
Everything in your program matters, but which exercises have the biggest impact on your goal?
For most of our programs it’s usually the first lift of the day, your squat, your RDL, you get the picture.
Whatever hits the most muscle at once. That’s likely your answer.
Step 3: Figure out what you actually have time for.
Can you go in and do just that one exercise?
Can you do half the sets?
Even just driving to the gym parking lot and back counts more than people realize!
It keeps the habit of actually going alive, and that matters more than most people think.
Step 4: Plan for the worst case.
Life is too crazy right now to even think about the gym.
I hear you.
But there’s still something you can do.
Do you have time for a quick bodyweight workout at home?
Even something as simple as 60 seconds of bodyweight squats before your shower, enough to work up a little sweat and stimulate your body before a normal day.
Your best effort today doesn’t always look like your best effort yesterday.
And that’s okay.
This framework works.
But applying it when you’re exhausted, behind at work, and your kids need you the second you walk through the door is a different story.
That’s exactly why most of our clients make such consistent progress with our help.
Our coaches handle the adjustments for you.
You keep your focus on your life, we handle your goals.
So if you’re the one trying to lose 15lbs before June but life is already asking too much of you, let’s talk.
