Do You Have The Right Mindset For Diet & Training?

“There’s already too much going on.” “I don’t have time to workout.” “No matter how hard I try, I just can’t lose weight.”

How many times have you caught yourself thinking this?

Here’s the thing, you’re not wrong. Between work, family, and everything else fighting for your attention, trying to also manage your diet and workouts can feel like you’re drowning.

And it doesn’t help when all you hear nowadays is:

  • Don’t have anything with added sugar
  • You need to eat a lot of healthy fats
  • Avoid foods that cause inflammation

So you’re already maxed out, and now you’re supposed to remember all of that too?

No wonder you feel stuck.

But what if I told you the problem isn’t that you’re too busy, or that you don’t know enough about nutrition?

What if the real problem is that you’re trying to control things you can’t control, and it’s wearing you out before you even start?

Let me show you what I mean.

It was my second fall camp in college. Being an offensive lineman, our pads were thicker and heavier, plus our school had us wearing knee braces. So when we had full gear on, it was pretty hot.

This day in particular was humid as can be. We had to squeeze in practice before a huge thunderstorm came in, so it felt extra muggy.

Every one of us was feeling the heat and we probably looked pretty defeated. Coach A, my position coach, came up to us to give us some choice words before we had to scrimmage.

“I wish I could make the weather cooler for you guys, but I can’t. I wish I could have you play in perfect conditions in each and every game this year. But there’s going to be hot games, there’s going to be cold games. That doesn’t change the job you have to do. You can’t control the weather, so don’t waste any time thinking about it.”

That hit me hard. And the same exact thing applies to losing weight and getting in shape.

You can’t control your work schedule becoming perfect. You can’t control your family suddenly needing less from you. You can’t control having the “ideal” home environment for meal prep and working out.

So why are you wasting energy trying to make those things perfect before you start?

Here’s the simple shift in thinking that changes everything…

Stop trying to control what you can’t control. Instead, look for what you CAN control in your diet and exercise, and do your very best there.

That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

You do this by picking one thing. What is one thing that you can do today to help you move towards your goal?

Now, this isn’t anything huge. Just focus on taking one step in the right direction. Swap out an unhealthy food for a healthy one. Or log all your food for the day. Or even get a 10 minute home workout in.

Pick something that can realistically get accomplished, and make that the standard. Everything else is extra credit if you can squeeze it in.

When you focus on what you can control, your day becomes so much more simple. You won’t be worn out from making so many decisions each and every day. Your goal is simple, and becomes easier and easier to follow the more you do it.

Start small, build momentum, and watch your habits and body change.

Now, if you’re sitting there thinking “okay this makes sense, but I still don’t know what MY one thing should be” I got you.
