I used to think form was pretty black and white.
Keep your chest up. Don’t let your knees cave. Stay above parallel.
There’s a right way and a wrong way, and if you’re not doing it the right way, you’re going to hurt yourself.
That was my thinking for a long time.
And honestly, I wasn’t totally wrong.
But I also wasn’t totally right.
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of coaching people and studying under some really sharp minds in this industry.
There is no such thing as universally good or bad form.
Let me explain what I mean by that.
The Bar Has To Clear The Floor
There are minimum conditions that need to be met just to safely execute a movement.
Think of it like driving.
You need to know how to steer, how to brake, and what the signs mean before you get on the highway.
That’s the baseline. Everyone needs it.
But after that, the way you drive to work doesn’t have to look identical to how someone else drives to work.
You both get there.
You’re both safe.
The same thing is true in the gym.
Two people can do what looks like the exact same squat, and one of them is getting dramatically more out of it than the other.
Not because one is cheating.
Not because one is wrong.
But because one coach took the time to understand that person’s body, their goal, and how to position them to get the most out of every single rep.
That’s the difference between a coach who knows a movement, and a coach who knows you!
Why Does This Matter?
I want to speak to something specific here.
If you’re a working adult who is already stretched thin, this is one of the most important things you can hear.
Your time is your most valuable resource. Not your money. Not your energy. Your time.
And when you’re already giving everything you have to your job, your family, and everything else life is asking of you right now, the last thing you can afford is to spend years in a gym and not actually get where you want to go.
That’s what happens when form coaching becomes rigid and one-size-fits-all.
You work hard.
You show up consistently.
You do what you’re told.
But because nobody took the time to figure out how your body moves best, you’re leaving results on the table.
Every. Single. Workout.
Meanwhile, someone else is working the same amount of time, maybe even less, and getting so much more out of it.
Not because they’re more disciplined or they’re more athletic.
Because their coach figured out how to get the best ROI out of every rep for them specifically.
This Is Why Some People Get There In 3 Months
I’ll be honest with you.
Some of the people we work with hit their goal and are walking out the door with everything they need in a few months.
We didn’t rush them or cut corners.
But when you have someone in your corner who actually knows what they’re doing, the process just doesn’t take as long.
Think about all the time you’ve spent either spinning your wheels, second-guessing yourself, or just going through the motions in the gym without knowing if what you’re doing is actually the right thing for your goal.
That time adds up.
And it’s not just time.
It’s the mental energy of trying to figure it out on your own.
Of wondering if you’re doing it right.
Of starting over every few months because something isn’t clicking.
That mental fatigue is real.
I’ve watched it wear really motivated, really capable people down to the point where they just stop.
And that kills me.
Because it didn’t have to go that way.
What Good Coaching Actually Looks Like
When you work with a great coach, here’s what changes.
They’re not handing you a checklist of rules to follow.
They’re watching how you move.
They’re asking questions.
They’re figuring out what your body does naturally and then shaping the exercise around you to get the absolute most out of it.
Your squat might look different from the person next to you.
And that’s a good thing.
Because your squat was built for you, not built from a textbook.
The result is that every workout you do is actually working for your goal. Not just in the general direction of it.
And that changes everything.
It means you get there faster. With less wasted effort. And with a whole lot less second-guessing along the way.
