You’ve probably seen it before.
A new study comes out, and within 48 hours, every supplement company, fitness influencer, and gym down the street is claiming they’ve “cracked the code” on fat loss or muscle building.
“This ONE thing changes everything!”
And if you’re someone who genuinely wants to make progress…
Who cares enough to actually research this stuff, it can feel overwhelming.
Like you’re always one study behind, always missing out on the latest breakthrough.
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of working with busy professionals who don’t have time for BS:
You don’t need a PhD to know if something’s worth your time.
You just need to know what questions to ask.
The Problem with “New” Research
Let me be clear. I love research!
Science is what separates guessing from knowing.
But here’s the thing most people don’t realize.
Science doesn’t change overnight.
When you see a headline screaming about a “groundbreaking study,” that’s usually one study.
One.
And in the world of science, a single study is just a suggestion, it’s not a new rule to follow.
Real, reliable evidence comes from looking at dozens or hundreds of studies together.
It comes from systematic reviews that analyze the entire body of research on a topic.
So when someone tells you that THIS new study means you need to completely change your approach? Red flag #1.
How to Think About New Findings
Here’s a framework that’s helped me and my clients cut through the marketing hype:
Ask: “Is this actually new, or just repackaged?”
Most “revolutionary” approaches are just old principles with new branding.
High-intensity training has been around since the 1970s.
Protein timing has been studied exhaustively for decades.
If someone’s claiming they invented something that flies in the face of everything we know, they’re probably overselling.
Ask: “Is this based on one study or a body of evidence?”
A single study might find that doing burpees while eating kale smoothies burns 3% more calories. Great! But does that 3% actually matter in the real world?
Does it fit with the hundreds of other studies on fat loss?
Probably not.
Ask: “Is this focusing on the big rocks or the tiny pebbles?”
Here’s where the fitness industry loves to mislead (even with good intentions).
They’ll take a finding that accounts for maybe 2% of your results and market it like it’s the whole game.
Meanwhile, the fundamentals that account for 98% of your results, consistent training, progressive overload, adequate protein, being in a calorie deficit for fat loss, get ignored because they’re not “sexy” enough to sell.
TENRA absolutely keeps up with current research. It’s so important to stay curious.
But we don’t rebuild our entire system every time a new paper drops.
Because our people deserve reliable and consistent results.
We build programs on the foundations that have been proven across decades of research: progressive resistance training, calorie and protein targets based on your goals, adequate recovery, and enough consistency to let the process work.
That’s not flashy. It doesn’t make for great Instagram content. But it’s what actually works.
And here’s the kicker: Because we’re not distracted by every new trend, we can focus on the variables that actually move the needle! That’s how we help busy adults see real results in a couple months, not years.
You don’t need to become a research expert to make progress. You just need to recognize when someone’s trying to sell you complexity instead of results.
The next time you see a claim that sounds too good to be true, ask yourself:
- Is this based on one study or decades of evidence?
- Does this focus on fundamentals or flashy details?
- Am I being sold a shortcut or a system?
The answers to those questions will save you time, money, and frustration.
And if you want a place where you can ask these kinds of questions and get honest answers?
I’m active every day in our free Facebook community. It’s a small group of people and some clients where you can share you success and struggles! I’m always happy to lend a hand there too!
We’d love to have you there!
