The Gym Is Too Intimidating

It’s already difficult finding time to get into the gym. But it can be so incredibly deflating when you do finally find time to squeeze a quick second it, it’s packed.

Yeah the machines are going to be busy.

But that isn’t the big reason why this hurts.
It seems like all of those people that are there will know…

  • you already don’t think you belong there
  • you don’t know what you’re doing
  • you are so much further behind than everyone else

Now, as someone who has spent their entire life in a gym setting, I know how you feel, but more importantly I know how to shake that feeling.

By the end of this post you will be able to take one step closer to feeling confident in the gym!

Confidence isn’t something you either have or not.
It is built just like anything else. One step at a time.
How do you build it?

1. Know What To Do

One thing that amplifies that intimidation feeling is not knowing what to do when you are at the gym.

You don’t want to be stuck walking around… because you know if you are wondering too long, you are going to wander to the cubbies for your stuff then wander right out that door.

So come in with a plan of attack!

“Today at the gym I am going to do this, then this, then this!

2. Have A Backup Plan

Preparation is anxieties WORST NIGHTMARE.

You already have your plan made. So what else can go wrong right?
Well, what if the machines are all taken up?

Pick 1-2 things that you feel the most comfortable doing in the gym, that you can bunker down and kill time with. Things like:

  • Walking on the treadmill
  • Talking with friends (If you brought a gym buddy)
  • Stretching on the turf
3. Ask A Lot Of Questions

If you find the gym intimidating, and you want to get over this fear because you want to focus on your health and fitness, one of the best (and easiest) things you can do is simply talk to people who are already in a community and have experience getting over that fear themselves.

Reach out to a friend, relative, or someone at your current gym who you feel comfortable with.
Ask them the questions that are really holding you from wanting to show up.

So many people have a strong fear of being judged or looking lost in the gym. You aren’t alone.

Diving head first into the gym does not have to be the only answer. You can build your confidence before you even show up.

If you want a safe space to be a part of a community so you don’t feel isolated in your gym, I included a link to our Facebook Group.

It is full of people just like you who care about their health and fitness and are always happy to help out a friend.
